Breed History

Saddest Day

A New Dawn

Height of Fame

An ancient breed revived for your enjoyment in our modern times! You can see they were a favorite of Italian nobility in early Renaissance paintings.

More recently in the 1950's the breed almost went extinct! We are working to change that.

As of July 1, 2006, the UKC recognized the Volpino with the same breed standard as the FCI. AKC registration is in the works and we hope will soon be available.

Temperament

Loyal companion dogs, love to be active outdoors and always draw a crowd of fawning people.
The Volpino is a loving and loyal breed. Our puppies are raised with their litter and used to being around other dogs. They also do great as your one and only special companion. The Volpino is as intelligent as they are beautiful. They love to run and play as much as they love to snuggle. They are protective of their family but warm up to others.

Size

Volpino Italiano should stand at or below knee height when full grown.

Females are around 9 LBS full grown and Males are around 11 lbs full grown.

Luna and Timian are on the larger side and our puppies could be around 2 lbs bigger than this.

Food

Home Made

Lots of families make food for their dogs at home. They do not feed them kibble or canned foods. Check out this recipe for ideas.

Dry Dog Food

When choosing a food or treat for your dog please keep in mind that some foods and treats have killed pets in the past. We recommend doing research into dog food and treat recalls. Dog foods have the potential to harm or kill if they are not from a highly reliable producer. Dog Food Recalls

We feed our dogs Instinct foods

Shedding & Grooming

The adolescent

At one year old they shed on their entire body. They can fill garbage cans. The nice thing is you can brush them and remove nearly all the shedding fur at once.

The Adult

Each year you can anticipate that they will lose their coat. A single brushing should take care of the majority of the fur.

The coat of the Volpino changes as they grow. This takes place between months 3 and 6.
We bathe our puppies regularly from a very young age. As they grow the frequency becomes less often. But your pup should be used to getting baths and cooperate nicely.

The Puppy

House/Crate Training

We suggest crate training your puppy.
Do not let them wander your home unsupervised until you trust them.
Keep them on a leash when they are out of the kennel to minimize opportunities to pee.
House training should not start until your puppy is 12-16 weeks old.
House training your puppy is about consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. The goal is to instill good habits and build a loving bond with your pet. It typically takes 4-6 months for a puppy to be fully house trained, but some puppies may take up to a year.

If your puppy goes in the house please be patient. Having an easy way to clean up accidents can make this stage easier.

Barking

The Volpino Italiano was bred to help guard large estates. Owners would normally have a large intimidating dog that would become alerted by the Volpino’s Barking.

In my experience they like to bark when something in their area has changed. They can become used to neighbors and ignore them when they are outside. If someone knocks on your door and you do not usually have a lot of visitors they are going to let you know someone is there.

If your street is occasionally busy outside, like mine, I live in front of a courthouse and they periodically have a lot of foot traffic. My Angel and Luna would sit in the window and bark at all the people and cars. They do not bark ALL of the time at all.

We do have a fenced in yard and so do not do a lot of leash training. We recommend working with them inside a fenced area giving them lots of time to adjust. We use special dog food as treats to reward good behaviors. As a result they are very loyal and do not wander far.

Adoption fees are due in full before the puppy leaves our house. Checks, Cashier’s Checks and Large Bills must clear the bank before the puppy will be allowed to leave. This may mean that payment needs to arrive here at least 1 week ahead of pick up. We do not accept digital or credit card forms of payment on the day of pickup.

In Person Pick Up

If you choose you and your family are welcome to come pick up the puppy in person. You can fly or drive. I personally have driven to Oklahoma and Massachusetts to pick up 2 of our dogs in person.
